Xinjiang Cotton Farmers

"At present, the planting area of China Cotton 113 has reached more than 95% in the 102nd Regiment, and it has won the favor and praise of cotton farmers by virtue of its early maturity, high quality, strong resistance and other characteristics." Zhao Kui, head of the People's Armed Forces Department of the 102nd Regiment of the 6th Division of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, said that in 2022, the average output of the whole Regiment will be 578.64 kilograms/mu. In 2023, the average output of the whole cluster will still reach 494.06kg/mu under frequent extreme conditions in the early stage.

Zhongmian 113 is a new cotton variety cultivated by the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences based on the national key research and development program. On August 29, the China Rural Technology Development Center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, in collaboration with the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, organized the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to hold the activity of "Special Basic Research on the Formation of Agricultural Biological Important Traits and Environmental Adaptability to Serve Xinjiang Rural Areas". Participants surveyed the promotion effect of "Zhongmian 113" in the 102nd Regiment of the 6th Division of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

The theme of this activity is "focusing on the demand of Xinjiang's cotton industry, promoting the implementation of key special achievements, and serving the rural revitalization with high-quality development of the cotton industry". The purpose of this activity is to inject new vitality into the cotton industry in Xinjiang through science and technology empowerment, and help the rural revitalization strategy to be deeply implemented.

New Varieties Expand the North Border of Cotton Planting in North Xinjiang

Xinjiang is an important cotton producing area in China. The cotton planting area accounts for 85% of the country, and the cotton output accounts for 91% of the country. The total output, unit yield, and commodity allocation have ranked first in the country for 30 consecutive years. The strategic role is irreplaceable. Ma Xiongfeng, deputy director and researcher of the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that due to the expansion of sub suitable and risky cotton areas in the region and the frequent occurrence of extreme weather events, it is difficult to synergistically improve the yield, quality and maturity, and there is an urgent need for new cotton varieties with high yield, good quality, especially good early maturity.

The new cotton variety "Zhongmian 113" was jointly selected by the Cotton Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Crop Research Institute of the Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, with a growth period of about 115 days. It has the characteristics of early maturity, high quality, stable growth, strong resistance to adversity, smooth boll opening, stable and high yield, and suitable for machine picking, surpassing the quality standards of "Australian cotton", It is suitable for cotton planting in the northwest inland of China and part of Central Asia. From 2022 to 2024, it has been selected as the leading agricultural variety of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the main recommended variety of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps for three consecutive years.

Ma Xiongfeng introduced that the early maturity characteristics of this variety have promoted the cotton suitability of the risk cotton areas in northern Xinjiang, expanded the northern boundary of cotton planting in northern Xinjiang, and can also be used for replanting of winter wheat after harvest in southern Xinjiang or replanting of cotton seedlings after extreme weather disasters such as hail and strong wind. In 2023, when Xinjiang is faced with frequent extreme weather, as a disaster relief variety, replanting will be carried out in the severely affected areas, and the yield will still be considerable, providing support for ensuring the income of cotton farmers and the effective supply of raw cotton in China.

"From the perspective of cotton processing, Zhongmian 113's fiber length, uniformity, breaking strength and other indicators are significantly better than other varieties, and it can earn more than 400 yuan per ton more than other varieties in terms of futures premium." Lu Dianhu, general manager of Xinjiang Fenghui Cotton Industry Co., Ltd., said.

Ge Yiqiang, chief engineer of China Rural Technology Development Center, said that the transformation of agricultural scientific and technological achievements in Xinjiang is leading. The next step is to focus on the urgent need for industrial development, the agricultural production scene, the transformation and promotion of achievements, the interdisciplinary and technological iteration, the open collaborative innovation, and the integration of four chains, and promote the deep integration of scientific and technological innovation and industrial innovation, Support the high-quality development of Xinjiang cotton industry.

Xinjiang has made remarkable achievements in the transformation of agricultural scientific and technological achievements by establishing demonstration bases for agricultural scientific and technological achievements and strengthening agricultural scientific and technological cooperation between academies and counties. With the support of the national key research and development program, the China Cotton Institute has successfully cultivated a major new cotton variety, Zhongmian 113, with early maturity, high quality and high yield, making an important contribution to ensuring the stable supply of high-quality cotton in northern Xinjiang, which is also an example of the transformation of agricultural scientific and technological achievements in Xinjiang.

New technology training benefits front-line cotton farmers

In order to accelerate the transformation of scientific and technological achievements into practical productivity, a cotton field management technology training meeting was also held at the event site. Li Pengcheng, Song Meizhen, Feng Hongjie and other experts from the cotton industry expert group of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences provide all-round guidance and support for local farmers in many aspects, such as new varieties, new technologies, new equipment, new fertilizers, etc. Through face-to-face communication, experts and cotton farmers jointly discussed the practical problems and solutions in cotton production, deepened the relationship between researchers and farmers, and provided valuable first-hand information for subsequent optimization and adjustment of scientific research direction.

Ge Yiqiang said that in this event, experts of the cotton industry technology system had in-depth exchanges and discussions with grass-roots agricultural technicians, representatives of large farmers and seed entrepreneurs. On the one hand, it has built a communication bridge to guide cotton scientific researchers to communicate face to face with front-line production personnel, understand Xinjiang's cotton industry development problems and grassroots needs, and refine major scientific issues from production practice; On the other hand, it is expected that scientific researchers can establish a long-term cooperation and exchange mechanism with local scientific and technological talents in Xinjiang, and jointly cultivate a group of core talents that can support the development of Xinjiang's cotton industry.

Cao Yongsheng, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Director of the Cotton Research Institute, said at the meeting that the project team should closely combine local actual production needs while deeply studying the formation of important agricultural biological traits and their environmental adaptation mechanism, to ensure that scientific research achievements can directly serve local agricultural development.

He said that efforts should be made to transform, promote and apply scientific and technological achievements. The project team should actively cooperate with local agricultural technicians and large growers to quickly transform scientific research achievements into productivity through on-site guidance, technical training and other forms, directly benefiting front-line farmers, so that the latest research achievements of agricultural biotechnology can go out of the laboratory and directly serve the vast rural land.

Cao Yongsheng said that the team should further strengthen cooperation with scientific research institutions, universities and agricultural enterprises, jointly build an open and collaborative innovation network, promote resource sharing and complementary advantages, and accelerate the pace of agricultural science and technology innovation.
