High Temperature And Drought Lead To A 37 Year Low Cotton Yield In Australia

It was reported on May 17 that according to the data recently released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the output of broad-leaved crops and cereals in Xinzhou, kunzhou and Western Australia decreased by 8% to 61 million tons due to high temperature and drought, resulting in a decrease of 5% to a $28 billion, a decrease of 20% to a $5 billion in the value of wheat, and a 72% decrease in cotton production to 115 million kg in fiscal year 2020, It is the lowest level since 1983.

According to the data, the agricultural land in Australia was 377 million hectares in 2020, which was 2% lower than that in 2019. The total agricultural output value increased slightly to a $61 billion.

Sarah Kiely, director of ABS agricultural statistics, said that due to poor seasonal conditions in most parts of Australia in fiscal year 2020, many cattle and sheep dealers reduced the number of livestock raising, resulting in a 14% to $150% increase in the value of beef and dairy cattle and a 16% increase in the value of sheep and lamb to a $5 billion.

Australia's sheep population fell to its lowest level since 1904, down 3% to 64 million. The number of beef cattle fell by 6% to 21 million, the lowest level since 1990.
